Drivers in Donegal urged to stay at home

Icy conditions and road closures in Co Donegal have prompted gardaí in the county to advise motorists to stay at home this morning.

“Gardai in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal are warning people not to make any unnecessary journeys” advised Nicola Hudson of AA Roadwatch.

“The N15 Donegal to Ballybofey road has been closed since 11:15pm Thursday, due to a serious crash at the Barnsmore Gap, and there have been huge number of crashes and skids throughout the county this morning due to ice.”

There are further problems in the border region as one of the diversion routes away from the N15 has been rendered impassable; there is no through road from Laghy to Castlederg due to ice, and drivers now have no option but to travel via Glenties, another very icy route.

“Aside from the N15 closure; other serious black spots include N13 Letterkenny to Lifford road and the Lifford / Derry road at Tullygay”

Severe warnings have also come for Longford and Mullingar commuter routes, including the Mullingar to Lanesborough Rd, especially at Ballymahon where gardaí said there were at least three crashes in the space of 20 minutes.
