Finance Minister Brian Lenihan urged the heads of six Irish banks tonight to dig deep to help ailing companies crumbling in the recession.

During crunch talks on a rescue package for the crisis-stricken financial sector, Mr Lenihan asked bank chiefs to consider the contribution they could make to the economy through credit initiatives for small and medium-sized businesses.
