GP evidence heard at Rossiter inquest

A GP has told the inquest into the death of teenager Brian Rossiter six years ago that she wondered if he was alive or dead when she saw him in Clonmel Garda Station.

Dr Bernie Rouse said that, on the morning of September 11, 2002, she received an urgent call to go to the garda station, where gardaí were finding it difficult to rouse a prisoner.

When she arrived, she said there was a general flurry and a young man was lying on the floor.

She said she was quite shocked by what she saw because he was totally still.

After administering CPR, his pulse returned and his face became a pinkish colour, although there was no spontaneous breathing.

She said she couldn't remember getting any clear answers when she asked what happened to him.

She also said that there was blue-black bruising around his eyes and on his chest cavity.

The prisoner, whom she confirmed was Brian Rossiter, was taken by ambulance to St Joseph's Hospital and later transferred to Cork University Hospital, where he died two days later.
