A Tipperary woman will make Irish naval history today when she becomes the first female officer to command a state ship.

A Tipperary woman will make Irish naval history today when she becomes the first female officer to command a state ship.

Roberta O'Brien, from Aherlow, will take command of the LE Aisling in Galway this afternoon.

The 31-year-old has served on a number of Irish navy ships and her family has a strong history in the Irish military.

Women currently make up just 5% of Defence Forces personnel.
