Government rows back on disability age restriction

The Department of Social Welfare is abandoning plans to raise the age for the payment of the disability allowance from 16 to 18.

The allowance is worth €800 each month to people who are disabled for at least one year.

Social Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin said that she came to her decision after the families of people with disabilities told her of the hardship the Budget measure would cause them.
