A transatlantic jet was forced to divert and make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport early today.

The United Airlines flight was travelling from Dulles International Airport in Washington DC to Frankfurt in Germany when the pilot sought permission to land at Shannon.

Emergency services were sent to the airport, while two units of the fire service were deployed to a holding area on the Ennis to Limerick dual-carriageway as a precaution.

The plane landed safely at around 6.15am and no one was injured.
