A search and rescue operation off the coast of Co Clare has been called off after it was declared to be a well-intended false alarm.

The alarm was raised at around 11am this morning after a person was reportedly seen in the water near the west Clare village of Carrigaholt.

The Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter and the RNLI Lifeboat from Kilrush were called to the area.

However, after a thorough search, the rescue chopper reported no sign of anyone in difficulty.
