Soccer fans are being advised not to travel to Georgia for Ireland's World Cup qualifier next month.

Football's world governing body says it is monitoring the situation in Georgia closely.

As it stands, Ireland's qualifier for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 against Georgia is still going ahead in the capital Tbilisi on September 6.

FIFA says it is closely monitoring the situation there and in staying in contact with both the FAI and soccer officials in Georgia.

FIFA says it is too early to speculate on any possibilities however the Department of Foreign Affairs says its travel warning remains in place.

This is being reviewed on a daily basis, but would require a significant turnaround in the situation in Georgia for the ban to be lifted in time for the match, if it even goes ahead.

Fans planning to be in Georgia for the game are being urged not to travel.
