Eirgrid has said that that by 2030 the Moneypoint power station will have closed, our peat supplies will be used up and that nuclear energy may have to be considered as an energy source.

Launching its annual report today, the company, which manages the electricity supply grid, said that electricity consumption is continuing to grow, rising by 2.3% last year.

It also said Ireland is on track to achieve our target of deriving 33% of our electricity supply from renewable sources.

However Eirgrid Chief Executive Dermot Byrne said that despite this, the country will still have to consider nuclear power as a future energy source.
