The Society of the Irish Motor Industry says more people are buying cars since changes to the VRT system were introduced earlier this month.

The organisation says car sales in the first nine days of July were up more than 90%.

It also says the cars being bought emit an average of 13% less CO2 than previous sales.

The figures appear to show that many buyers waited for the CO2-linked VRT rates to come into force before making their purchase.
