Lawyer: Sharon maintained innocence

Following this evening’s verdict, solicitor Eugene O’Kelly made a statement on behalf of the Collins family.

Speaking outside the Four Courts and flanked by Sharon’s sons David and Gary, he said: “Sharon Collins has maintained her innocence in this trial. The jury have found her guilty.

"The judge has adjourned sentencing for the preparation of reports. Accordingly, in relation to the comment, it would be inappropriate to comment any further on the verdict at this stage."

Mr O’Kelly said that the two persons “most affected other than Sharon as a result of this verdict are her two sons.”

“These are two fine young men who have displayed loyalty, devotion and love to her mother. They have stood by her in this trial and their lives have now been shattered as a result of the outcome.”

Mr O’Kelly asked that David and Gary be “afforded the respect and the privacy to adjust to the changed circumstances.”

“These circumstances are entirely not of their making and they now have to move on.”

Asked if the verdict will be appealed, Mr O’Kelly said that the matter is still before the court and no sentence has been given yet.

Meanwhile, a statement was also issued on behalf of PJ, Robert and Niall Howard:

"We are relieved that this long trial has come to a conclusion and we would like to express our appreciation to the members of the jury for their patience and attention.

"It is also appropriate to record our gratitude to the many people who have assisted us during this difficult period. We now look forward to getting on with our lives and we request the privacy that's necessary to assist us in this respect. It is not our intention to make any further statement."
