FG says Cobh cancer rates a 'major cause of concern'

Fine Gael's health spokesman says the high rates of cancer near the site of the former Irish Steel plant in Cork Harbour are a major cause of concern.

Dr James Reilly is visiting Cork today to discuss the situation with local residents.

Last week, it emerged that a huge quantity of hazardous waste dumped at the Haulbowline site contained the carcinogen Chromium 6.

It was later revealed that cancer rates in nearby Cobh are well above the national average, though no link has been proven.

Dr Reilly says the situation needs to be assessed immediately.
