Men arrested after dog attack are released without charge

Five men arrested after a garda was savaged by pitbull dogs during a drugs raid have been released without charge.

They were detained after two officers were attacked by the terriers at a house in Galway city.

A file on the five freed men will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Detectives were continuing to question two other men arrested later.

One garda officer needed 100 stitches to his left leg after he was attacked by a pitbull during the raid and another officer was also injured in separate attack after a dog warden and garda unit was sent to the home.

There were three dogs in the house, two of which were pitbulls.

The first attack took place as gardai searched a house on Dominic’s Road during a drugs raid on Thursday night.

A dog warden was sent to the address on Friday and a garda accompanying him was also bitten, suffering minor injuries to his leg.

Two dogs have been put down.

Heroin with a potential street value of 4,000 euro was found in the house.
