Former British prime minister John Major says he cannot see a way around the impasse that's come about as a result of Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon treaty.

He made the remarks at a ceremony where he and former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds were awarded the freedom of Cork city for their work on the peace process.
