Ethnic recognition would lead to greater integration, say Travellers
The Irish Travellers Movement has said that the recognition of travellers as an ethnic minority would lead to greater integration with the settled community.
At their AGM this week the group called for Travellers to be given a specific ethnic status, which it claims would give travellers better rights and recognition within Irish society.
ITM director Damien Peelo said it would also help to break down barriers that exist with the settled community.
"I think it is hugely beneficial for the whole of the island of Ireland to recognise travellers as an ethnic group," Mr Peelo said.
"It would give us a sense of self confidence and would to lead engagement with the community we have been in conflict with."
