Fishermen hold talks to discuss progress
Fishermen from around the country are holding talks in Athlone this morning following their meeting with the Agriculture and Fisheries Minister.
Brendan Smith met with members of the Federation of Irish Fishermen yesterday and gave them assurances that he will request a new EU-funded package to help fishermen cope with the rising fuel prices.
Fishermen say that 80% of their annual income is now spent on fuel, compared with 15% a number of years ago.
It is understood that fishermen are considering their response to the Minister's proposals at this morning's meeting.
The leaders of blockades at Cork Harbour have indicated that protests may resume if they are not satisfied with the Minister's response.
