Plans submitted for new Giant’s Causeway centre
Plans for a new €27m visitor centre at the Giant's Causeway in Co Antrim have been submitted to the local authorities.
Tourist facilities at the popular natural attraction have been housed in temporary buildings since the previous centre burned down eight years ago.
Earlier this year, Stormont rejected a plan for a privately-owned centre at the site and the DUP's Ian Paisley Jnr subsequently had to resign after criticism of his links to the property developer behind the proposal.
The National Trust is now seeking permission for a new publicly owned centre designed by Dublin-based architects.
If approved, it says, taxpayers will have to fund less than half of the €27m cost.
