Food prices increased at more than double the rate of inflation in the European Union, with dairy products outstripping other food classes for the largest annual rise in April.

Consumers in Ireland faced a hike of 8.4% for a range of food stuffs bought in supermarkets, compared with 6.2% for the rest of Europe, according to new data from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.
