Man killed in collision with car

A 43-year-old man was knocked down and killed just after midnight.

The man was struck by a car on the N8 Dublin to Cork Road, two miles north of Durrow, Co Laois at 12.20am.

Gardaí said he was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

A section of the N8 near where the accident occurred has been closed off and motorists were being diverted.

Gardaí at Abbeyleix are investigating.
