Micheal Wall due back before Mahon Tribunal today

Manchester businessman Micheal Wall is due back before the Mahon Tribunal today to answer questions about his financial dealings with Bertie Ahern.

Mr Wall is expected to be asked about a sum of more than £28,000 in cash that he brought to Ireland in a suitcase in 1994 and gave to the former Taoiseach.

Mr Ahern says the money was used to refurbish a house that he was renting from Mr Wall.

Yesterday, the businessman admitted making a political donation to Fianna Fáil in the 1980s, despite saying he had no interest in the party at the time.

He said he gave £2,000 in cash to Mr Ahern's associate, Tim Collins, during a local election campaign sometime around 1989.

He told the tribunal that no one ever asked him for the donation and he admitted that he had no interest in Fianna Fáil or in Irish politics, but said he had some good friends in Drumcondra and wanted to help out.

Mr Wall said he told Mr Collins the money was for the election campaign, but the tribunal heard that the sum was not lodged to a Fianna Fáil election account and instead went into the so-called B/T account.

When asked if he was happy with this, Mr Wall said he just hoped it ended up with a good cause.
