Thousands bid farewell to President Hillery

Former President of Ireland, Dr Patrick Hillery, was today remembered as a humble and private man who achieved so much for his country.

The late politician was given a dignified send off as a full State funeral proceeded through Dublin city centre.

Thousands of people turned out at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral to pay their respects to the doctor, known affectionately as Paddy, who died last Saturday after a short illness.

The 84-year-old's widow Maeve, their son Dr John Hillery and his wife Carolyn, and their children Sarah, Patrick, Michael and David, were among the 1,200 mourners who filled the city centre cathedral.

Just after noon the Requiem Mass began for Ireland's sixth Head of State.

The scent of myrrh hung in the air as symbols representing Dr Hillery's life were placed on the alter.

A stethoscope which portrayed his occupation, keys of schools he opened around the country, a medal to mark Ireland's accession to the EU, a sailing cap, and a painting of his family home in his native Co Clare were carried forward as the instrumental Inis Oirr echoed through the church.

Then a moving service, which celebrated both his public and private life, was led by close family friend Fr Aidan Lehane and Fr Des Hillery, the former president's nephew.

Despite the number of dignitaries and photographers and camera men silently moving through the congregation, the Mass was a poignant tribute to Dr Hillery, his family and friends, and in particular his native Co Clare,

In his homily, Fr Hillery recalled his uncle's public achievements from being a medical doctor to his 40 years in politics as a local TD, government minister, Ireland's first European Commissioner and his Presidency which he held for 14 years.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and President Mary McAleese both gave readings during the dignified, low-key ceremony.

Dublin Mayor Paddy Bourke, Taoiseach-in-waiting Brian Cowen, cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, former Taoisigh Garret Fitzgerald and Albert Reynolds, and representatives of the Oireachtas, Judiciary and Diplomatic Corps were among the congregation.

Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness also attended the funeral, along with SDLP deputy leader Alasdair McDonnell.

Draped in the Tricolour, Dr Hillery's coffin was carried by a party of pallbearers from the 2nd Military Police Company, Eastern Brigade to outside where hundreds had gathered to hear the service.

Thousands more lined the streets of Dublin to give Dr Hillery one last farewell as he made his final journey to his resting place at St Fintan's cemetery, where he was buried beside his daughter Vivienne.
