Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has published details of the long-awaited Dublin Transport Authority, which will oversee traffic management and infrastructure developments in the capital and surrounding areas.

One of the authority's main duties will be to over see the building of new roads and public-transport schemes in Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and Meath.

These projects include LUAS extensions and the proposed underground metro linking Dublin city centre to the airport.

The DTA also aims to manage traffic in the region and introduce a new integrated ticketing system for bus and rail users.

Elsewhere, it will be asked to ensure that residential and commercial developments are only built in areas where suitable transport links are already in place.
