The Irish Anti War Movement today condemned the shameful legacy of Bertie Ahern.
Chair of the IAWM, Richard Boyd Barrett said: "Bertie Ahern presided over the destruction of Irish neutrality by allowing the US torture flights and its war machine full facilities at Shannon airport.
"This directly implicates the Irish nation in the million lives lost in Iraq since the US invasion five years ago, a complicity Bertie Ahern bears direct responsibility for.
"Ahern must also answer for the shocking revelations that Murray Air was issued a licence to fly depleted uranium and other US war materials from Irish airports.
"As well as the human toll this material has brought to the people of Iraq, Irish lives have been put in danger by the leaked fuel from one of its aircraft in the past couple of days which made an emergency lanind at Shannon spilling material over the Askeaton area.
"The Ahern government support for the Lisbon Treaty is a further attempt to integrate Ireland into the militarization programmes of the EU and NATO.
"Many Irish people will not allow the cloying sentimentality of the valedictory eulogies to Ahern to cloud their condemnation of his role in these matters and will along with the Irish Anti War Movement judge his legacy to be shameful."
