An Bord Pleanala has given the go-ahead for a controversial €500m natural gas terminal in Co. Kerry.

The board ruled today that the project is in accordance with the National Development Plan and local planning objectives.

The approval is subject to 40 conditions.

Shannon Development, which owns the site between Tarbert and Ballylongford where the project is to be located, has welcomed the decision as a major milestone in addressing the country's energy needs.
