Hundreds attend funeral mass of Rome road victim

Hundreds of people have turned out in Co Limerick for the funeral mass of one of the Irishwomen killed in a hit-and-run in Rome last week.

Elizabeth Gubbins, 27, from Lisnagry, was struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing in the early hours of last Tuesday, along with her 29-year-old friend Mary Clare Collins, from Kildare.

The driver of the car, Friedrich Vernarelli, is in custody awaiting trial on charges of drink driving, manslaughter and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

At today's mass, family and friends heard her uncle, Canon Willie Fitzmaurice, say Elizabeth was someone who always loved life and will always be remembered.
