Green councillor questions party stance on Taoiseach

A prominent Green Party councillor is reportedly questioning his party's ongoing support for the Taoiseach in the wake of the latest revelations from the Mahon Tribunal.

Former Galway Mayor Niall O Brolchain is quoted this morning as saying he believes Bertie Ahern should step down as it is not appropriate for him to remain in office.

He also says many Green Party members are increasingly uncomfortable about the Taoiseach's evidence before the Mahon Tribunal.

Mr O Brolchain's comments are out of step with the stance adopted by the party leadership, which has repeatedly refused to pass judgement until the tribunal issues its report on the matter.

He says questions will be raised at a party meeting in Dundalk next month about whether the Greens should withdraw their support for Mr Ahern.
