Driver questioned and released after Westmeath accident

A man is still in a serious condition in hospital this afternoon after he was knocked down by a car in Co Westmeath.

The 22-year-old pedestrian suffered serious head injuries after he was struck by a car on the Dublin Road in Athlone just before midnight.

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old man, was arrested by gardaí at the scene but has since been released. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

Meanwhile, gardaí have named the 30-year-old man who lost his life in a crash in Co Monaghan yesterday.

David Carolan from Ballyjamesduff in Co Cavan died when his motorbike hit a wall at Drumbear.
