A handgun and two grenades were found in a car in Dublin, gardaí said today.

A 44-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were arrested by officers targeting gangland crime in the capital.

Gardaí from the Organised Crime Unit stopped the vehicle in Walkinstown Road shortly after 9pm as part of Operation Anvil.

A garda spokesman said that, during the course of a search, a handgun and two grenades were discovered.

“Both the male and female were arrested and are being detained at Garda stations in South Dublin under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act,” he added.

The pair can be held for 72 hours.
