42kgs of cannabis found at mail depot

Gardaí and the Customs Service have seized a large quantity of herbal cannabis which arrived in Ireland by mail.

Around 42 kilograms of the drug were discovered in four parcels at the Portlaoise mail depot in Co Laois.

The parcels had originated in South Africa and were labelled as personal effects.

A 28-year-old has been arrested in Waterford in connection with the seizure, which Customs says was worth €420,000.
