A 29-year-old man has died and another has been injured in a gangland-style gun attack at a house in the Newcastle area of west Dublin last night.

A 29-year-old man has died and another has been injured in a gangland-style gun attack at a house in the Newcastle area of west Dublin last night.

The shooting was carried out by a lone gunman who entered the house in Castlelyon Drive at around 10.30pm.

The dead man had just returned home after a night out with his girlfriend when he was shot in the head and the back.

His body was discovered in an upstairs bedroom.

His partner and two children aged three and five were in the house at the time of the shooting.

A second man in his early 20s was also shot and injured in the hallway of the house and is said to be in a stable condition at Tallaght Hospital.

The scene has been sealed off for technical examination and the State Pathologist has been asked to attend.

Gardaí have also discovered a burned-out car a short distance away which they believe was used by the gunman.

The dead man is believed to have been known to detectives and is understood to have a number of minor criminal convictions.
