Garda arrested in fraud investigation

A serving Garda officer was today arrested as part of a major fraud investigation.

The 50-year-old man was detained by his colleagues during a raid on a house in New Ross, Co Wexford.

Detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI) and the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation (GBFI) were involved in the ongoing operation.

The arrested officer is being questioned at New Ross Garda Station under the provisions of section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

A Garda spokesman said: “The arrested man is a serving member of An Garda Siochana and has been suspended from duty.”

The investigation into criminal activity, believed to be centred on the fraudulent issuing of official documents, has been ongoing for years.
