Boy, 17, facing sentence for 40 offences

A 17-year-old boy facing sentence for over forty offences has been remanded on continuing bail by the Dublin Children’s Court pending sentence.

Judge Ann Ryan today heard that the teen had not come to Garda attention since his last court appearance in February.

The teen has also been given further time to work with the Probation Service to address his offending.

In April, the boy is to face the possible activation of an 18-month suspended sentence handed down by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The teen is also facing a separate case in the Circuit Court over an alleged incident where he is accused of violently trying to rob a couple after posing as an interested buyer for the car they had been selling.

The Children’s Court, which had refused jurisdiction to hear the case, had been told the north inner city Dublin boy arrived at the couple’s home claiming to be interested in buying the car.

“They took it for a test drive and later were showing him where the wheel-brace was,” a garda had alleged.

He said it was alleged the boy then took the wheel-brace and threatened them with telling them “to give him all their money” before fleeing.

Judge Ann Ryan adjourned the teen’s remaining Children’s Court charges and summons until after his Circuit Court matters have been dealt with. The teen, who was accompanied to court by his mother, was remanded on bail to appear again in April.

The boy will then face sentencing for 33 charges and nine summonses for a range of offences committed since late 2005.

The boy’s solicitor had said earlier his offending had “dropped dramatically” since last February. “He comes from a situation where he had been coming to court two or three times a week at some stages,” she had also said.

The solicitor also told the court yesterday (MON) that since his last court appearance he has found a job.

::September 15, 2007: stole €20 from a man.

::September 7, 2007: Stole a briefcase worth €50, at Common Street.

::August 28, 2007: Stole a laptop worth €800, at Common Street.

::August 18, 2007: unlawfully interfered with the mechanism of a motor vehicle, at Faith Avenue, D.3; criminally damaged same vehicle.

::July 31, 2007: unlawfully interfered with the mechanism of a motor vehicle, at Seville Place, D.1.

::May 26, 2007: driving without a licence and insurance, and failing to produce documentation.

::February 8, 2007: Two charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act for simple possession of cannabis and also possessing the drug for supply to another, at Sherrif Street.
