Human remains found in Sligo lough

Human remains were today pulled from a lough in Co Sligo.

Gardaí said they have recovered what appeared to be a body from the waters around Lough Gill.

A garda spokesman said analysis and identification are likely to take a considerable period of time.

"In the meantime, garda investigations into the circumstances surrounding the discovery are continuing," he added.

The discovery came as officers in the area continued to probe the disappearance of Sligo teenager Melissa Mahon.

Melissa was just 14 when she went missing from her home in Rathbraughan Park in September 2006.

Last week, garda sub-aqua teams resumed a search of the beauty spot for the girl's body.

It came amid reports detectives were investigating a claim the teenager may have been murdered and her body dumped in the lough.
