A teenager facing sentence over a spate of car break-ins and for a gang attack on a Polish boy, who was repeatedly kicked and stamped on, has been released on bail by the Dublin Children’s Court.

The 17-year-old boy was remanded in custody to St Patrick’s Institution a month ago for breaching bail conditions, re-offending and because at the time he was unable to return to his home at that time because his mother was ill.

Judge Ann Ryan granted bail today in relation to the charges over a spate of incidents where he broke into 12 cars in Dun Laoghaire, late last year.

She adjourned the case for two weeks for these charges to be joined up for sentencing with another prosecution where the boy has pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to a 17-year-old Polish teen, at Church View Road, in Ballybrack, in south Dublin, on April 6 last.

She was told that there was no longer a Garda objection to bail since the boy’s mother had recovered and was now able to take him home.

Giving evidence in relation to the attack Detective Garda Alan Clear, of Cabinteely station, had said earlier that the victim had been walking through a car park when he was asked for the loan of a cigarette lighter by some youths which he agreed to let them use.

They refused to give it back and the injured party walked after them into a field.

"The victim was knocked to the ground, youths held him down. Two kicked and punched him on the ground. The assault lasted for two minutes until the injured party managed to escape," Det.Gda Clear said.

The victim suffered cuts and bruising to his head but has made a full recovery.

Counsel for the boy had said the welfare report on the teenager was not very positive. The teen lacked structure in his life had a "precarious home situation".
