Kedik trial to continue on Monday
The trial of a Turkish barber charged with murdering his estranged partner in front of their son will proceed on Monday with 11 jurors, after one juror was discharged yesterday afternoon.
Hadim Kedik, aged 33, with an address at 10 Connolly Street, Clonakilty, Co Cork, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Rose Patterson, 30, between April 11 and 12, last year.
Kedik, who came to Ireland from Turkey to work in a barbershop in Clonakilty in 2002, has admitted inflicting Ms Patterson’s injuries but says he never planned to kill her.
A male juror was discharged yesterday afternoon after telling the court he needed to travel abroad on Tuesday and would not be able to sit on the jury past Monday.
Mr John O’Kelly SC for the Director of Public Prosecutions and Mr Blaise O’Carroll SC for the defence are expected to close their cases to the jury on Monday, with Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy charging the jury on Monday afternoon.
Justice McCarthy thanked the juror for his efforts and said the trial would continue with 11 jurors.
Mr O’Kelly closed the DPP case yesterday with Mr O’Carroll calling evidence from a Turkish interpreter hired by the courts.
Sema Cahill said translations given during Gardaí video interviews with Kedik were not strictly correct in relation to letters Kedik had written which detailed his thoughts about killing Ms Patterson and then himself.
The court had heard Kedik told gardaí he wrote the two letters on the Tuesday night - the night before Ms Patterson was killed.
Ms Cahill said Kedik had actually said he was not sure when he had written the letters and in the case of one letter, he said, he had written it on the Wednesday.
She said Kedik spoke in broken sentences and was hard to understand.
Mr Justice McCarthy said the jurors would be given a verbatim translation of the relevant interview on Monday morning.
The trial in the Central Criminal Court at Dublin will resume at 10am on Monday morning.
