Collapsed schoolboy in stable condition

A teenager who collapsed at a school athletics event is no longer in a critical condition in hospital, it emerged tonight.

The second year pupil, who is being treated in Cork University Hospital, is now considered stable, a spokesman for the Health Service Executive said.

The schoolboy lost consciousness just moments after taking part in an activity at the CBS in Midleton yesterday.

A PE teacher and first aid specialist at the scene used a defibrillator machine on the youngster and carried out resuscitation until he was escorted to hospital.

The youngster, said to be 14 or 15 years old, is a pupil at Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Dunmanway.

Some 500 pupils from more than 20 schools were taking part in the sports day, staged by South Munster Schools Athletics.
