Labour calls for debate on 'health insurance for all'

The Labour Party has called for a public debate on the benefits of a universal health insurance scheme to end the distinction between public and private patients.

The idea, which was first mooted by the party seven years ago, will be up for discussion at a conference in Dublin today.

The General Secretary of the Irish Nurses Organisation Liam Doran and Consultant Oncologist Professor John Crown will be among those addressing the forum.

The party's health spokesperson Jan O' Sullivan has said Ireland's health system remains in crisis despite substantial additional spending.
