Bomb victim's partner denied British Army pension

A woman whose partner was killed in a dissident republican bomb attack has been denied a British Army pension because the couple were not married.

David Caldwell, a father-of-three and former UDR soldier, died after picking up a booby-trapped lunchbox packed with explosives at the Territorial Army base in Derry almost six years ago.

His partner, Mavis McFaul, says she has been told that she does not qualify for his pension and is struggling to get by on means-tested state benefits of £79-a-week.
