Greens to vote on EU Reform Treaty today

A tight vote is predicted today as Green Party members cast their ballots on the EU Reform Treaty.

Six TDs and two senators have already decided to campaign for a ’Yes’ vote in the forthcoming referendum, expected in May.

Today’s special members’ convention to decide overall party position on the issue takes place in the Hilton Hotel in Dublin.

A lengthy afternoon debate will follow morning workshops led by Government ministers John Gormley, Eamon Ryan and Trevor Sargent.

The party’s Europe spokesperson Senator Deirdre de Burca said the 2,100 members will participate in a comprehensive discussion of the issue.

“Our members have a very important decision to make and I hope that as many people as possible turn up to hear a very full and balanced debate,” she said.

Under party rules, a total of three motions will have to be voted on – one supporting the Treaty, one rejecting the Treaty and another recognising the meeting as a special convention.

A two-thirds majority is required for each motion to be carried.

The results of the vote are expected at 5pm and will be followed by a press conference by senior party figures.
