Nine in 10 homeless 'suffer poor health'
Nine out of 10 homeless people suffer from poor health, it emerged today.
Almost half of all those living on the streets experience mental health problems, while the majority experience problems with alcohol or drugs.
The links between poor health and the homeless will be highlighted by the Simon Communities of Ireland today at the launch of its 2006 Annual Review.
“Unfortunately, last year a significant number of people who used Simon’s services met an untimely death,” said Chief Executive, Patrick Burke.
“Our Annual Review will detail the numbers who have passed away and the responses that are needed to ensure that the health needs of people who are homeless – and at risk of homelessness – are effectively dealt with.”
Housing Minister Batt O’Keeffe will formally launch the report at the headquarters of EBS, who have partnered with the Simon Communities in the provision of permanent move-on accommodation for homeless people.
