Minister for Education Mary Hanafin has launched new guidelines which will change the way teachers assess pupils' progress through their primary school years.

The document, which has been drawn up by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment, will also inform teachers about how best to report to parents.

Information on standardised testing, where all primary school children will be tested in English and Maths at the ages of seven and 11, is also included.

Ms Hanafin says these new guidelines will ensure that children's progress is carefully monitored and reviewed on a regular basis.
