Harney faces down barrage of criticism
Minister for Health Mary Harney has faced down a barrage of criticism in the Dáil from opposition TDs demanding her resignation.
Ms Harney is refusing to step down from her position despite the scandal surrounding the misdiagnosis of breast cancer patients at Portlaoise Hospital.
Last night, the Dáil began debating a Labour Party motion of no confidence in her handling of the health service.
A string of opposition TDs demanded that she take responsibility for the scandal, with Fine Gael's James Reilly urging Fianna Fáil backbenchers to vote with their conscience rather than toeing the party line when the motion comes up for a vote tonight.
The motion is almost certain to be defeated, however, as the Green Party will be supporting Ms Harney and Fianna Fáil has threatened to expel any TDs who do not vote with the Government.
