A total of 4,000 people complained about taxi services in 2006, it emerged today.

The first report from the Commission for Taxi Regulation was today presented to the Government at its weekly Cabinet meeting.

There are currently 16,200 licensed taxi drivers in Ireland, 4,000 hackneys and 1,100 limousine services.

The report said there were about 4,000 calls to the Commission’s Customer Helpline in 2006.

The Government established the Commission for Taxi Regulation in September 2004.

It develops and maintains a regulatory framework for the control and operation of small public service vehicles.
