Inspectors watch destruction of loyalist arms

A consignment of loyalist guns has been destroyed in the view of arms inspectors in the North, it was confirmed tonight.

However, sources close to the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) faction insisted the handover to General John de Chastelain's Independent International Commission on Decommission was unauthorised.

One said: "It was a stunt, it is a gimmick and a joke."

The grouping involved are believed to come from the breakaway south east Antrim area.

The weapons were destroyed last Saturday at the Ballykinlar army barracks in Co Down.

The move is unconnected to the UDA's inner circle.
