Scheme urges people to look out for elderly neighbours
A nationwide scheme is urging householders to get to know their elderly neighbours and do them a good turn.
National Community Alert Awareness Week was today launched in Co Tipperary by Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Pat Moylan.
National organisation Muintir na Tire is urging everyone to carry out one act of neighbourly kindness this week to highlight the role of Community Alert in keeping communities safe.
“One act of being a good neighbour is what we’re asking people to do this week,” said Muintir na Tire president Dermot O’Donnell.
“This could mean doing a domestic chore for some elderly person, checking their windows and doors are secure, bringing out their bin for collection or sweeping up leaves.
“In the changing times we live in we feel that it’s good to take stock with whom we share our community and to give a little back.”
Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan last week launched Muintir na Tire’s new Community Alert Strategy: 2007-2011.
