Man charged with murder of Swiss student

A 27-year-old man has appeared at a Galway court charged with the murder of Swiss student Manuela Riedo.

Gerald Barry with an address at 187 Rosan Glas, Rahoon, Galway, appeared just after 10.00am this morning.

Detective Sergeant Brendan Carroll told Judge Mary Fahey that Mr Barry was arrested at Mill Street garda station before midnight, and charged with the offence. He made no reply to the charge.

Judge Fahey granted Barry free legal aid.

He was remanded to Castlerea Prison to appear again on October 26.
