Irish troops will take part in the National Spanish Day parade through the streets of Madrid today.

Four soldiers currently based with the 36 Infantry Group in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) will march with an Irish flag in the parade which forms part of the city's major festivities.

National Spanish Day is a public holiday commemorating the historic re-unification of Spain, as well as Christopher Columbus's first successful voyage from Spain to the Americas in 1492.

The main event of the day is a massive procession through the centre of Madrid attended by members of the Spanish royal family and prominent government officials.

The Spanish National Day (Dia de la Hispanidad) will this year mark the work of UN troops in promoting peace, especially in Lebanon.

The organisers of the Madrid event have invited all 27 contributing countries to Unifil to participate in the procession.
