Several people were evacuated from their homes today as an army bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device.

The apparatus was found between two rubbish skips in Cabra on Dublin’s northside at around 5am.

A defence forces spokesman said the device was an elaborate hoax.

Residents on Carnlough Road were evacuated while the controlled explosion was carried out.

Gardaí closed Carnlough Road at its junctions with the Navan Road and Annamoe Road following the discovery but it was later re-opened.
