PSNI denies over-reacting to Derry disturbance

The PSNI is today defending itself against Sinn Féin claims that it over-reacted to a fight in Derry city centre yesterday, allegedly triggering two hours of rioting.

The PSNI is today defending itself against Sinn Féin claims that it over-reacted to a fight in Derry city centre yesterday, allegedly triggering two hours of rioting.

Sinn Féin says the arrival of a large number of police turned what was a minor event into a full-scale riot.

However, the PSNI says the disturbance was not as severe as described and only 50 or so people were involved.

It also says police officers responded proportionately to the situation.
