The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is calling on the Government to sign up to new UN standards aimed at preventing the mistreatment of detainees.

The Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture would require Ireland to set up a powerful new monitoring system to prevent ill-treatment of detainees in psychiatric hospitals, prisons and other institutions.
